Surveying Art Journals

I have decided for this portion of the class to explore the Cabinet Magazine Online

I didn't want to pick a website or magazine that focused more on film because that's what I'm studying in everything else. This page has a lot of pictures and stories that seem to be pretty interesting. I'll admit what sold me on the idea of this particular page was the first sub link I clicked off of it entitled Enormous Muffins. It was just a bunch of pictures of people my age baking a huge muffin in a flower pot. I found this to be pretty hilarious and right up my alley so this is the page I am sticking with.

Kate -
Hilarity is a good reason for me. Especially the smart and curious kind of humor one would find at Cabinet. I find that publication to offer the best type of whimsey - provocative, smart, thoughtful. I like the magazine because it is more curated than edited, per se. It seems interested in reinventing or redefining the form of the magazine, opening it up to exhibitions, showcases of art work. Or art work as another vehicle for thought, kindred to the essays and articles (academic and personal) that Cabinet shares.

Schwartz's done the street carries the magazine if you wanted to look at a hard copy. (The library doesn't have it.) Take a look, but the website is a fine collection, and has some great links. (I encourage you to check out the Guy Ben-ner video.)

Anyway sorry if I have added to any oppressive nature of film study. Your response - to look elsewhere - makes sense. Especially as the thinking, the explorations, and the delight that can be found in Cabinet will function, I think, I hope, as a nice complement to that pursued in our class. Let me know: I look forward to your posts.

The guidelines for the second round of blogs is now posted on the D2L site. Check them out and get back to me with any questions. These posts are due 29 October.
